From Survival Food to Soil Nutrition: How Kudzu Vine Nourishes Our Camellia Trees

Looking through our family farm’s WeChat group today, my brother shared a few photos straight from our high-altitude mountain orchards.


The images showed a vibrant carpet of wild Kudzu vines (野葛藤) naturally blanketing the hillsides. My brother joked in the group: "The wild Kudzu is taking over the mountaintop again! Kudzu is known as 'Jiangnan's Little Ginseng'—we're turning its lush vines into pure organic fertilizer!"
My brother holds a degree from a prestigious Forestry Academy and served as a forest policeman for years. Today, he applies his deep forestry science expertise right on our family land. Seeing his plan to crush the nutrient-dense vines to feed our oil tea trees, I texted back with a smile: "Using 'Little Ginseng' vines as organic fertilizer for the trees? Talk about a superfood boost!"
The Roots of Survival: My Grandfather's Story
Looking at those lush green Kudzu leaves, my mind drifted back to my childhood memories.
My grandmother used to tell us stories about the severe famine years in China during the late 1950s. Food was scarce, and to keep his young children from starving, my grandfather would hike deep into the wild mountains before dawn every single day. He dug up wild Kudzu roots, ground them into a fine starch, and cooked a warm porridge to feed my mother and aunts and uncles.
